Certified insulin pump trainer (CPT) programme

What is the cpt programme?

This programme was initiated in 2002 as a pan-European pathway of education for health care professionals working in diabetes care and insulin pump therapy.
The CPT programme demonstrates our commitment to providing a consistently high standard of training and provides documented evidence of participation and competence for the individual.

The CPT programme recognises an individual as competent and able to:
  • Train other health care professionals and patients in the practical aspects of MiniMed pump therapy safely and effectively.
  • Initiate pump therapy independently within the hospital diabetes team.
Who is eligible for the cpt programme?
Any Health Care Professional within a Diabetes Care Team including doctors, nurses or dieticians directly involved in starting patients on Medtronic MiniMed pump therapy who have:

  • Attended a recognised pump course and are familiar with the basics of insulin pump therapy and Medtronic MiniMed pumps.
  • Experience (even if supervised) of starting 1/2 patients on any model of Medtronic MiniMed pump.
How do you become a certified pump trainer?
CPT training is held regularly throughout the year at easily accessible locations.
It consists of hands-on pump experience and a multiple-choice exam. Reading material is sent in advance and must be read prior to training.

Pumps are available during the exam for reference and an exam score of 80% or greater is required for certifi cation. Exams can be re-taken if necessary.

A certificate is issued to successful candidates and is valid for 12 months. After 12 months you will be notifi ed by Medtronic MiniMed that re-certifi cation is required to maintain CPT status.
